Nasi Gandul is a specialty of Pati, Central Java, consisting of white rice with beef or offal, served in a thick, sweet and savory sauce. Its name originates from an ancient way of selling, where the vendor would carry his wares "hanging" (gandul) on a bamboo pole, with one side holding the soup pot and the other side holding the rice and eating utensils.

The Origin of Nasi Gandul
Name: The word "gandul" comes from the way vendors in the past carried their wares: carrying a bamboo pole with a pot of soup and a basket of rice hanging from each end. The up-and-down movement while walking is called "menggandul."
History: This dish first became popular in Gajahmati Village, Pati District, and is estimated to have been around since 1955.
Popularity: It used to be a traditional street vendor, but now many stalls sell it, making Nasi Gandul a culinary icon of Pati. This dish is now widely available.
